This morning we presented awards at our Academic Awards ceremony. Congratulations to all students who received one of those awards, and I also encourage all students to consider the feedback they received last semester and set some goals for the coming weeks to address this feedback.

Everyone’s learning goals will be different. Sometimes several attempts need to be made to reach those learning goals. I read a short story recently that helps to illustrate this.

A long time ago, during a devastating spell of dry weather, there was a thirsty crow who was desperate for a drink of water. The poor crow flew and flew in search of a means to quench his thirst. From one place to another he went, until, at long last, when he could fly no further, he came upon a large bottle of water at the base of a tree.

Overjoyed, the thirsty crow thrust its jet-black beak inside to drink his fill. But, alas, the bottle had a narrow neck! Try as he might, the despairing crow couldn’t get his head far enough inside. To his dismay, he realized the water was out of reach. The thirsty crow cried out and flapped his wings in anguish. He attempted to knock the bottle over. But to no avail. It was too heavy for his weary, dehydrated body to budge. The crow was on the verge of exhaustion and ready to fly elsewhere.

But then an idea came to him. Around the base of the bottle sat some small round pebbles. Picking them up, one by one, the thirsty crow dropped them into the bottle. Again and again, he placed these stones inside and with every extra pebble, the water level began to rise…

His idea worked. Eventually, after much toil, the water rose so high inside the bottle that the clever crow was able to drink his fill and sate his thirst for good.

There are many lessons we can take from this story, but the one I choose to take is to never give up. Sometimes we need to try different ways or keep trying again to reach our goals. Ó£ÌÒ¸£ÀûÊÓƵ and progressing in school can be the same.

As Year 11 students move into their final year of schooling, each one of them will lead the St Margaret’s student community. Whilst not every student will receive a formal leadership position, each student will offer their wisdom, strengths, and talents to lead younger students in living out the school values, St Margaret’s Way, and shaping the culture and community of our school. This is a great gift to the entire St Margaret’s community.

Girls from varying cultural backgrounds all share common experiences of growing up. By exploring these common experiences, we begin to understand that we are not as different as we first thought. This weekend, the girls in boarding will enjoy team building exercises, art, dance and cooking activities and on Saturday night, they will enjoy a delicious dinner prepared by our wonderful catering staff held, under fairy lights on Circular Drive, overlooking the Brisbane city.

The activities are mostly run by our Year 12 students, and they enjoy the opportunity to share their skills and expertise with the younger girls. The closed weekend allows the girls to come together as a community, share their differences and similarities, and build on relationships under a setting of activity and fun. It is a highlight of the boarding calendar.

Year 12 Academic Progress Meetings

Bookings for Year 12 Academic Progress Meetings are now open. All students will do a QCE Points check, and ATAR eligible students will receive their latest ATAR prediction. Parents are welcome to attend these meetings either in person or via phone. Meetings are available before, during and after school.

Secondary Assessment Policy

A reminder that all students should familiarise themselves with the Secondary Assessment Policy, which can be found on the POD. In particular, I would like to draw attention to the checkpoint and drafting expectations. Checkpoints and drafts are important in assisting students to manage their time effectively, providing goal posts along the way to a larger task, and develop strategies to submit completed assessment by the due date. They also provide opportunities for teachers to gather evidence of completed work prior to the due date and implement intervention if required. Students and parents should note that failure to meet a checkpoint will result in parents/carers (and boarding house where applicable) being contacted by the teacher and the relevant Head of Faculty and Dean of Studies/Academics being informed. If a student fails to submit a genuine attempt of a completed draft by the due date, it will result in parents/carers (and the boarding house where applicable) being contacted, the relevant Head of Faculty and Dean of Studies/Academics being informed and an afterschool Academic Detention being issued.

On Tuesday we held the Secondary Interhouse Athletics Carnival where girls enjoyed an unseasonably warm day with their peers to support their House members as they battled it out on the track, field and in spirit through cheering and war cries. Days like this demonstrate what can happen when, as an individual, you compete and in turn contribute to your team. The athletes competed for themselves but contributed towards their House points score, which gives an extra layer of healthy competition to the day. Cheers were abundant as the girls rounded the bend into the finishing straight with the cheering helping the athletes to find that little bit extra to get over the line, that little bit faster. It is always fantastic to see the celebrations and congratulations at the conclusion of events. 

In addition to the running, jumping and throwing, we saw our Philanthropy leaders raise funds for their chosen charity Zig Zag by organising a sausage sizzle, Dip n Dots, a coffee van and Shaved Ice. Our philanthropy leaders are making real difference in helping Zig Zag by raising awareness. Zig Zag provides a place of healing, support, and social action and change for young women aged 12-25 years. As a feminist service, they are committed to working alongside young women and acknowledging their expertise in their own lives.

Finishing Term 2 with Grandparents, Godparents and Parents Day which included the Interhouse Choral and Ballgames Competition was very special. Thank you to Ms Box for her organisation of this big day and congratulations to the students and teachers who participated. At the end of Term 2 the Semester 1 Academic Reports were released, thank you to the teachers for the time they spent moderating and preparing them. The Academic Reports provide valuable feedback to students and parents on both their academic progress and effort. Feedback is one of the top influences on student achievement and we encourage you to spend time with your daughter reviewing the feedback received from her teachers. 

Keep an eye out over the coming weeks for contributions from our Primary teachers including Mrs Karen Andrews-Close, Mrs Sarah Singleton and Mrs Belinda Knowles (who has written this week’s article below).

In week 3, this collaborative cooking project will continue when Pre-Prep students visit the kitchen to prepare and create their meals with the older students. This shared culinary activity offers important experiences for all the students involved as it allows for different areas of personal and academic growth. Through the project a dynamic and inclusive environment is created where students can enhance their social interaction, learn about healthy eating, enhance skills in different curriculum areas and foster a sense of belonging within the school community.

The collaborative learning approach used in this project, encourages social interactions and builds positive relationships among students of different ages. The Year 9 students serve as mentors, and role models, for the younger students as the Pre-Prep students develop a sense of accomplishment.

Moreover, this type of engagement allows for the development of essential life skills such as nutrition, food preparation, and basic cooking techniques while laying the foundation for a healthy lifestyle.

Finally, this cooking experience offers opportunities for cross-curricular learning. Students develop a holistic understanding of academic concepts by incorporating subjects such as maths, science, and literacy into the cooking process. Together, students practice measurement and estimation skills, explore scientific principles like heat and chemical reactions, and engage in reading activities through recipe exploration. These across year level experiences will have lifelong benefits for all the students involved.

Congratulations to our students who participated in the State Honours Ensemble Program (SHEP) last weekend. Hosted and organised by the Griffith University Queensland Conservatorium, the Honours Ensemble Programs bring together the finest young secondary school musicians from around the country to rehearse and perform together with renowned international and national conductors. These programs are wonderful opportunities for our music students to further develop their musical capacity whilst also developing friendships with other young musicians from around Southeast Queensland. I would like to also update that Nadia Charoensuk has received her Certificate of Music in Contemporary Piano, C.Mus.AGMS with High Distinction, at a national award ceremony on Saturday 3 June 2023. She performed Spirit of the Frame by Eustace.

Soaring Upwards 2023

The Ó£ÌÒ¸£ÀûÊÓƵ Music Department is very excited to present the Soaring Upwards Music Festival on Saturday 29 July from 11:30am – 3:30pm. This will be a fun, informal opportunity for students to perform repertoire they have been learning in their respective ensembles on a big stage with a professional sound crew. The draft program of performances is below with approximate times. Feel free to bring along a picnic blanket/snacks to enjoy whilst listening to the performances. Plenty of chairs and stools will also be made available for audience members. Thank you to the Music Support Group who are organising food for purchase which will include hot dogs, fairy floss, popcorn and cold drinks (soft drinks/water/juices). We are also hoping to provide a coffee van for the event. This will be an exciting event for the students to be involved in and we look forward to having many in the audience to support the performances!

Music Tour 2024

A reminder that deposits are due this coming Friday 14 July to express an interest in the proposed Music Tour to Salzburg, Prague, Vienna and Bratislava in 2024 during the June/July holidays. The proposed itinerary is attached. (PDF 1.3MB) The tour will be open to students currently in Years 8-11 (Years 9-12, 2024) and in one of the following ensembles: Exultate, Sister Helen Wind Symphony and Chamber Strings. Students in Years 7 and 8 who are in these ensembles may be able to participate upon application. Students will gain unique and rewarding experiences, not only from a musical perspective but also from a cultural perspective, providing lifelong memories. Final costs are still to be confirmed and will be dependent on final numbers committing to the tour; however, the provisional cost provided to us by the organising travel company is $8,600. To secure a place on the tour, an initial deposit of $500 is required. Deposit payments can be made via Parent Lounge. Please note the deposit is fully refundable if insufficient numbers commit to the tour.

Holiday Sport Camps

Well done to the students and staff who participated in the various sport training camps across the holiday period. Our rowers, track & field athletes and netballers all got stuck into multiple days of training camps, working hard and setting their sights upon the competitions ahead. While our volleyballers and swimmers continued to develop their skills through their training days. 

Sport Farewells

At the end of last term, we were sad to farewell Ms Delia Eastland. Ms Eastland, most recently our Extra Curricular Administrator, has been with St Margaret’s for 16 years and within that time has supported and nurtured the journey of many students, staff, and community members. Her care, support and strong promotion of Sport & Activities will be dearly missed. We thank her greatly for the contribution she has made towards St Margaret’s.

We also farewelled Mr Eric Brown from the Athletics Program. Mr Brown, Australia’s greatest multi-event coach, has served St Margaret’s ably for over 20 Years. His work ethic and performance mindset has guided so many students at St Margaret’s to achieve incredible things and we shall miss his coaching expertise enormously.

We wish both Ms Eastland and Mr Brown all the very best for their future endeavours. 

Parent Support Group

This QG Winter Season our P&F Association, in collaboration with our respective Sporting Parent Support Groups, are facilitating the St Margaret’s Winter Sport Pasta Drive.

This combined fundraiser has been set up to support the pursuits of our Tennis, Hockey, Volleyball, Athletics and Rhythmic Gymnastics programs. Profits will be split between these sporting groups.

We would greatly appreciate the support of our wider Ó£ÌÒ¸£ÀûÊÓƵ community to support this initiative. If willing, please stock up on healthy, fresh, locally made pasta products for your growing athlete, busy family and staff lunches.

Sporting Achievement

It’s with great pleasure that we can recognise the outstanding sport performances and representation of St Margaret’s students at a national and international level. I would like to highlight and congratulate the following students on their recent achievements:

• Clementine Cooke (Year 7), Annabelle Spall (Year 8), Mena Bertinato (Year 8), Adelaide Bothwell (Year 8) and Ruby Comiskey (Year 8), who represented Queensland at the Water Polo Australia 13 Years & Under National Development Carnival in Hobart. Queensland performed extremely well taking top 3 positions in the competition format.
• Indiahna Frawley (Year 12) who represented Queensland at the Australian Schools Rugby Championships. Indi’s effort and performance at these championships were honoured with her being named in the U18 Australian Schools Merit Team.
• Millie Watson (Year 10) and Jelena Batty (Year 8) who represented Met North at the Queensland School Sport Touch Football Championships. It was fantastic to see two St Margaret’s students represented. Millie’s effort and performance at these championships were honoured with her being selected for the Queensland Representative School Sport Team.
• Daisy Brown (Year 11) who has been selected to represent Queensland at the upcoming Soccer National Talent Competition to be held in Melbourne. We wish Daisy all the very best for her upcoming competition.
• Sophie Martin (Year 12) who at the end of last term, competed at the Australia Open Swimming Trials, working towards selection for the Dolphins Team that shall contest the upcoming World Championships. In an outstanding effort Sophie qualified for the final of the 200m Individual Medley.
• Ashley Blackman (Year 9) who has been selected to attend the Australia Little Athletics National Training Camp. Ashley’s effort and performance in High Jump were honoured with this selection. Well done, Ashley.

Sport Awards Evening – Representative Achievements

The St Margaret’s Sport Awards Evening is an opportunity to recognise and acknowledge the achievements of students who represent Queensland and Australia within their respective School Sport and Club Sport Pathways.

Given club sport is external to St Margaret’s we do appreciate students and/or parents/guardians notifying the Activities Office of student representation at this level. Recognition is acknowledged of those students who are selected and compete within a representative Queensland or Australian team.

This year our theme is ‘Star Gazing’ where we are celebrating artists such as JMW Turner, Justinna Napaljarri Sims, Edvard Munch, Camille Pissarro and Vincent Van Gogh whose works capture the magnificent display of light, colour and life that occurs above our heads each night.

The ticket price includes a four-course experience, designed by the fabulous Head Chef Scott Johnson. The food will be served in our gallery, surrounded by artwork from the local Fireworks Gallery.

Professional Women’s Network Breakfast with Jane Carland, General Manager, Castrol (Australia and New Zealand)

Tickets are now on sale for the third Professional Women's Network Breakfast for 2023 with guest speaker, Jane Carland.

Jane Carland is the General Manager of Castrol for Australia and New Zealand. She has over 25 years’ experience in the energy sector across ANZ and Asia Pacific having worked in most aspects of the energy value chain including Operations, Marketing, Sales, Strategy and Business Development. She also holds several Director roles.

Jane has had the opportunity to be at the forefront of innovation and energy transition initiatives, providing customers with alternate, lower emission energy options. Prior to her current role, she led the development of LNG as an alternative fuel across Asia Pacific which provided her and the family an amazing cultural experience. She is passionate about customers and seeing people achieve their potential.
