What was evident (by the sea of orange on the hill) was the very supportive community that is St Margaret’s. This is also evident by attendance at P and F events. The P and F Race Day is on this Saturday (2 September) and it is sold out; in fact, it sold out within 7 days. If you are disappointed that you cannot show your support for Race Day through attendance there is always the option of purchasing . As not only a significant friend-raising but also a fundraising body in the school, all the funds raised from the P and F raffle are directed to supporting school initiatives, in this case, the creation of “The Loft’ – the Collaborative Lecture Space. Therefore, I encourage you all to support such an important development in the school through your purchase of raffle tickets.

Inspired by an article on ‘5 Huge Life Lessons I wish I Could Tell My Younger Self’ () I offer to you some of the thoughts I, on occasion, share with the students. Sometimes, I tell the girls that I would like to be 15 again – but only if I knew at that age what I know now! On other occasions, I ask them to try to remember this moment in a conversation where I have imparted wisdom and insight which I know they will not act upon. I ask them to remember this moment when they reflect on life – perhaps in their forties – and say ‘That was great advice that Ms Curtis gave me!'. I could not keep my list to 5. I share these with you, thinking that it would be interesting for you to prepare your own list and then discuss it with your daughters.

1. Always be guided by kindness, respect and service to others.
2. Be kind to yourself and ignore judgement and censure of others, particularly of those people whose opinion you should not value.
3. Seize every opportunity that comes your way if it matches your values –  and don’t be scared. Have faith that you can find your way back if you do end up through the wrong door.
4. Be more grateful for, more forgiving of and more interested in everyone around you.
5. Love your parents as unconditionally as they love you.
6. Perfection is a fantasy. No one is perfect and there is no point striving for something that does not exist.
7. Not everyone thinks the same as you and is motivated by the same drivers; therefore, trust your instinct/intuition. If you are not feeling comfortable (in a relationship or in a situation), it is time to really work out why and what you need to do about that.
8. Happiness is only something that you can have ‘on balance’. In other words, some times will be good, some times will be less than good. But when you look back, on balance, you may have been quite happy and satisfied. Respect that that sort of perspective can only come from a pursuing a life of purpose and contribution.

I was fortunate to attend the celebratory lunch for our rowers on Sunday. I thought I would include part of my speech in the newsletter this week:

All rowers and particularly those who won their races, have received many accolades this weekend. But let us always remember the whole team, those who won their races and those who did not, you have all shown commitment and perseverance and it is those characteristics of the whole St Margaret’s rowing team that won the Aggregate Cup.

I love coming and watching our school sporting teams go out there and represent our school so well as you all did yesterday. I was so impressed by your ability and performance out there on the water.

Like many others, I also follow whatever is in season, either on TV or by attending live competitions. There are many sports men and women out there that I truly admire and love to watch them in their sports.

It is important to know that these people, our sports role models, are not only known for their achievements on the water, or on the field, or court, or in the arena. We notice these people, and why do we notice them at all times, not just when they are winning? We notice and admire them for how they hold themselves, how gracious they are in victory and in defeat, how focussed they are, how they treat others, how they treat themselves. They have all faced obstacles on their journey, they have been sick or injured, they have fallen down and gotten back up again, but ultimately their hard work in terms of the hours of training has paid off, they have all run (or rowed) their own race, the one they have worked towards, whether that be individually or as a team.

They also have a passion for that sport and the pathway they take. They love it, and that’s one thing that we all notice about our rowers and all students involved in sport at St Margaret’s, we can tell you love it.

Jared kindly invited me along to one of your early Friday morning trainings early in the term, just before you started your weekly regattas and I was fortunate to say hello to many of you that morning.

I witnessed first-hand the hard work that you all put in to your training that morning. I saw the respect you showed your coaches and each other and willingness to take on their advice. I saw your determination to work as a team and your readiness to begin the season and go out there and give your best. I also witnessed the laughter and fun that comes with it, the friendly rivalry between teams having a couple of sprints together up the river, and the encouragement you gave each other.

And now that we are at the end of that season, it has all paid off and you have won the Aggregate Cup. You showed commitment and perseverance through injury and illness to members of your teams, crazy wind out on the dam - even continuing to row and cross the finish line when team members had lost their oars, all the training that is required in the lead up and during the season; you demonstrated grace in both victory and defeat. You have done the school proud, you have done your families and friends proud, and I hope you have done yourselves proud. We all wish for you all to continue to do your best, on and off the water. Use those skills of commitment and perseverance and all those observations I had of you when you were training and in your races at school with your academics as well, and with all other aspects of your lives.

In a darkened space, visitors are invited to consider God’s place in their lives, who is God, what is God like? Lava lamps, a plasma ball, a UV light … all may explore the wondrous possibilities of God’s light shining through our darkest moments.

This can be a fun space and all are invited to participate and contemplate the nature of God and the presence of the light of God in our darkest moments.

The plasma ball shows bonds, connections with a centre and with each other … does this assist you in your imagining of a godliness? A sacred ‘other’?

The Dark room allows a separation from the world, even for a moment. Allow the darkness to embrace you before turning on the UV torch. Enjoy the moment of revelation.

Dadirri will return in Term 4 in Weeks 6 and 7. This is usually a time of assessment, but also a perfect time to come and seek calm and grace. St Margaret’s Prayer Spaces are open to all members of the school community.

Pet Blessing and Thanksgiving for Creation - Sunday 15 October 2017, 9am

All pets and their owners are invited to come along to The Barley Sugar Garden on Sunday 15 October for the annual blessing of the pets. Bring a blanket, all the family, and don’t forget to dress up your pet (or teddy bear) for some novelty prizes!

The morning will begin from 8:30am with the Blessing Service starting at 9am. Stay for a chat and some morning tea.

Rev Nicki Colledge, Long Service Leave 2 September – October 7 2017

Charles Darwin once remarked, “If I had my life to live over again, I would have made a rule to read some poetry and listen to some music at least once a week”. Music, in whatever form brings the girls together in Boarding and has a positive impact on their mood.

Research has found that learning music facilitates learning other subjects and enhances skills that children inevitably use in other areas. Music in general boosts mood and soothes, and is a great way for the girls to relax.

Last Tuesday evening, we had our first ‘Boarder Musicians Concert’ for all girls involved in the Co-curricular Music Program. We listened to girls who had just started learning an instrument or singing lessons and those who have been playing for a number of years. All of the girls were outstanding and the recital provided them with the opportunity to perform in front of their peers and gain confidence. I would like to thank Mr King for the initiative which will be an event that we will hold each semester. Mr King and Mr Ng provided wonderful support throughout the evening and their positive reinforcement provided the girls with encouragement to keep practicing and performing.

A great deal of commitment has gone into the preparation for QCS - commitment by students and staff. In reality, they have been preparing for this testing throughout their entire period of formal education and even before that, but since the end of last year they have been engaged in a targeted program designed to maximise their performance on the papers.

Now that QCS is over the Year 12s, along with the Year 11s will be turning their attention to Block Exams.

Making the Most of Exam Block

Careful time management can alleviate some of the stress for students as they enter the exam period. When girls are feeling overwhelmed by conflicting demands, ensuring that they plan the way they use their time in study block helps to optimise the quality of their learning. Careful planning also assists those students who may feel a lack of motivation. Creating a schedule allows them to chunk their study into manageable parts. I often write about this idea at this time of the year and some of you may have read something similar before from me.

It is easy for hours and even days to be wasted in Exam Block without very much being achieved. Spending time creating a schedule which incorporates learning sessions, rest/relaxation and other commitments allows students to make the most of the time they have. Sessions of no more than an hour are most effective to facilitate focused learning. A full study day which is organised into sessions will result in more productive learning than a day which is viewed as nothing but study. The table below illustrates this:

At the beginning of each session students should set themselves goals relating to what they want to achieve during the time. This makes the learning more productive. It is important that our girls think about the nature of the work they are doing rather than the number of hours they are spending. They need to remember that they are preparing for a particular type of assessment and not just endeavouring to memorise facts. Usually deep learning is about how a student can apply her understanding to a particular context.

Such wise words from our youngest students in the Secondary School. It is a fine balance the job that I do. I am in a constant conversation with myself about how to ensure girls are made aware of their strengths and weaknesses by using data and feedback and not allowing this to impact negatively on their learning. The feedback and data needs to inspire and light a fire in the belly of the student so they know what they need to do or what they need to do differently. This lesson with my Year 7 Science of Ó£ÌÒ¸£ÀûÊÓƵ class affirmed to me that the girls know what they need to do, we just need to let them do it their way for them to learn best.

Academic Assessment Services

As part of the ACER review and the new Strategic Plan “A Local School with a Global Outlook” we have formed a partnership with Academic Assessment Services (AAS). This partnership will enable us to collect student data that will enhance our ability to continue to develop programs that are targeted to allow for student growth in pursuit of academic excellence. This data collection will occur with Years 2, 4, 6, 8 and 10 students though out the year. Year 10 girls completed this assessment earlier this year and have been provided with a report to supplement their Careers Program.

From these tests, we will receive an overview of each student in relation to:

• General reasoning (Verbal and Non Verbal)
• Mathematics Achievement
• Spelling
• Written Expression

This information will be shared with parents, in conjunction with school-based data, as part of the Academic Advising Program that is beginning in 2018. More information will follow with regards to the sharing of this information at the beginning of 2018.

Most importantly, as a school, we see this as a valuable data collection process to assist teachers to make informed decisions about how and what they need to teach and how the girls can use this data to make robust decisions around how they need to direct their learning for now and into the future.

Supervised Study Sessions

Next week is the last week of Supervised Study Sessions for Term 3. Supervised Study Sessions will resume in Term 4 running each evening (except Friday) from 5:00 - 7:30pm in the Library, from Monday 9 October to Thursday 23 November. In last week’s article I wrote about Carol Dwecks’ research on growth mindset. This week’s article will continue with her research on appropriate praise. Professor Dweck has also been researching the concept of praise and the messages we communicate about what we value. She cautions us against praising our children and students for their intelligence alone, drawing on her research that proves that this praise can be severely damaging to a child’s sense of self-worth and a have a direct adverse impact upon academic success. Outcomes of her studies disclose that students who were praised for their effort were more motivated to persist with more challenging tasks and ultimately achieved higher test results. 

Different ways of praising are outlined below:

Intelligence Praise:

“Wow, that’s a really good score. You must be really smart.”

Process Praise:

“Wow, that’s a really good score. You must have tried really hard.”

Professor Dweck challenges parents and educators to praise effort and struggle, approaches and choices, selecting difficult tasks, persevering, learning and improving over ‘being smart’ alone. In fact, every word and act sends a message. It tells students how to think about themselves. It can be a fixed mindset message that says, “You have permanent traits and I’m judging them”. Or it can be a growth mindset message that says, “You are a developing person and I am interested in your development”.

As educators, we endeavour to implement strategies, approaches and methods in our teaching and dealings with students that have come out of this interesting research. If you would like to read more about the relationship between mindsets and praise you can .

This theme not only aligned with Book Week but carried the message issued by Archbishop Phillip Aspinall to all Anglican Schools. His challenge for schools this year, was to look after the planet and care for our environment. He implored us to enjoy nature and notice the life around us. The storyline that tied the items together at Arts Spectacular carried this message, particularly appreciating the beauty and wonder of the sea in our own backyard, The Great Barrier Reef.

Thank you to Kerry Rider for inspiring the girls to great heights and to create such truly amazing art pieces, which reflected the beauty of The Great Barrier Reef. Thank you to Tracey Bruce and the many parent helpers, in particular, the Year 5 parents and special mention to Helen Zahnow and Sandra Franklin, for their support of the girls.

The script, written by Maree Clancy, which was ably performed thanks to the Private Speech and Drama students; Isabella Evans, Arkie Edwards, Sally Bambling, Lucy Williams, Julia White, Charlotte Nehill and Kate Ryan. The script linked perfectly the songs, performances and environmental message. I was pleased there was a happy ending with the main characters returning to St Margaret’s as boarders!

The singing and music were brilliant. Congratulations to Highly Strung members: Madeline Hignett, Naomi Colledge, Genevieve Heather, Sienna Kendall, Ruby Beard, Lucia Owen and Alexandra Holland for their Beach Boys rendition. Thank you to Ms Brennan for overseeing all the musical items, particularly the moving finalé song. Thank you to Suzy Edwards for helping the Year 5 girls reach the summer vibe with their dance and to Mary Surtees for overseeing the lead up and stage management of the evening. Thank you also to all the staff who worked in the courtyard and backstage.

Thank you to families for attending and supporting both the girls and the event. Arts Spectacular and other performance opportunities are evidence of our commitment to the Arts, but it is also an opportunity for the girls to apply what they have learnt in class and present to such an appreciative audience. Everyone’s contribution made the evening the success that it was.

Finally, in the words of the Arts Captains, Lucy Williamson, Sophia Connor, Sophie Webster and Lani McWilliam every year I am “blown out of the water” by the art created by the girls, so much so I am heard saying “this is the best one ever Kerry” to quote the script and once again these words came to my mind.

Andrews Cup Athletics

On 17 August, the St Margaret’s Andrews Cup Athletics team headed to Q.S.A.C. to compete in the competition. St Margaret’s girls did well placing 3rd in the 10 and 11 Years Division and 6th overall in both the Aggregate Cup and Percentage Cup. Congratulations to the following girls for their record breaking efforts and outstanding results. These results now go into Andrews Cup History.

Term’s notice of withdrawal

As we are approaching the end of Term 3, I remind parents that if your child is not returning to St Margaret’s in 2018, we require one full school term’s written notice (or one school term’s fees in lieu of notice) when withdrawing a student from the school. Currently, we are working on the 2018 timetable and staffing and it is important that we have accurate enrolment numbers. In some year levels, we have waiting lists and we need to be able to contact those on the list who are hoping to secure a place at the school. Parents of students in Years P – 6 will have received an email last week outlining the process for booking a Parent/Teacher interview for either Monday 11 September or Friday 15 September. A reminder that bookings will open for students attending the Japan Tour on Wednesday 30 August, 9:00am and for all other families on Thursday 31 August at 9:00am. The booking system will close at 5:00pm on Wednesday 6 September.

These interviews are student-led interviews for students in Years 3 – 6. Your daughters will share their portfolios with you and discuss their progress and achievement to date. Students in Prep to Year 2 will bring their portfolios home for you to view before the interview. We ask you to bring your daughter’s portfolio and any questions you have to your interview.

Choral Concert

Fast approaching is our annual whole of school Choral Concert. It is always a fun night filled with lots of dynamic performances from all choirs across the Primary and Secondary Schools. This year’s concert will be no exception with girls learning a wide variety of repertoire ranging from Broadway tunes to pop songs. The Year 2s will perform with Encorah which is always a special treat and we will of course hear from the St Margaret’s Community Choir. The concert will be held on Tuesday 12 September in Eton Hall, starting at 6:30pm with refreshments available in Eton Courtyard from 6:00pm. Vicki Wilson Cup
The Senior girls played against Mount Alvernia College on Monday afternoon vying for their place in the finals series. The girls demonstrated strong passing and fast footwork to come away with a close win. They will now play in the finals series on the first weekend in Term 4.

The Junior girls will be playing in the Northside finals this Friday at Wavell Heights State High School. Wishing the girls and their coach, Karen Booth all the best of luck.

The girls found Brisbane Girls Grammar School the strongest opponents of the season so far. Unfortunately, the girls came close in a few matches but were unsuccessful across Volleyball, Hockey and Tennis. In Netball, the Open girls played a tough match coming away with a win along with Senior A, 9A and 7A.

Congratulations
Congratulations to Summer Short who competed at the National Surf Lifesaving Championships in Adelaide, representing Queensland. Summer won three individual medals; a silver and two bronze. She was also part of the winning Queensland team who won the Interstate Championships. Summer has now been selected in the Australian Youth Lifesaving squad and the Australian Youth Lifesaving team. She will travel to New Zealand in October to compete.

Lara and Lucinda Crouch ran in the weekend Bridge to Brisbane 5km race. The girls were the 2nd and 3rd women across the line.

Please note that confirming actual dates for the exchanges is a tedious process between the schools as some of our exchange school partners do not start their selection process until later in the year or early next year.

Correspondence from St Margaret’s Students Away on Exchange

I recently received another exciting update from Sophie Cosgrove and Imogen Morison who are away on their exchange to South Africa:

We have been very busy in South Africa, going hot air ballooning, on a safari, shark diving as well as fitting in school work. Hot air ballooning was so cool and we had a very nice view of the country side. On the Safari, we saw so many animals, with the lions coming very close to our vehicle! Shark Diving was very scary at first. We were swimming outside the cage and the sharks would swim so close to you that sometimes they would touch you. We are having a blast and cannot believe that we are past halfway!! This week is half-term so our host families are taking us out. My family is taking me to the beach whereas Imogen's is taking her on another safari in Johannesburg.

St Margaret’s students assemble ‘pamper packs’ for families to be given on their arrival as a special treat. The Year 11 cohort has made an effort to gather items for these packs and would like to petition you for your support. If you have any items that might be suitable and are willing to donate them, please bring them to School Support at your convenience by 12 September. Items could include chocolates and lollies, jams and cookies, toiletries such as soaps and lotions, art and craft items, gift vouchers and alcohol.

We are also seeking help from volunteer Registered Nurses within the community. Nursing cover is required for a range of shifts for the duration of the three-day camp. Law LEAD Scholarships - apply now
The TC Beirne School of Law is currently offering the Leadership, Excellence and Diversity (LEAD) Scholarship to deserving students from disadvantaged backgrounds who intend to study an undergraduate law program at UQ. For 2018 entry up to 17 LEAD scholarships are available, granting students $7,000 per year for up to five years in financial support, in addition to one-on-one academic support and other benefits.

New program: Bachelor of Advanced Business (Honours), QTAC Code - 709101
From 2018, UQ Business School will offer a Bachelor of Advanced Business (Honours). This elite program will help students become critical and reflective thinkers, capable of identifying, analysing and developing solutions for the complex challenges facing businesses in the 21st century.

Our four-year honours program will be limited to a small, highly motivated and high-achieving cohort aspiring to leadership roles in business, the community or academia.

The courses in this program are designed to ensure students stand out to employers and are run by internationally respected industry experts and academics. Our unique capstone course in leadership and ethics will give students the opportunity to apply their knowledge and skills on real business cases. UQ School of Economics Scholarships
Applications are now open for two invaluable scholarship opportunities at the UQ School of Economics: The Year 12 Domestic Australian Scholarship and The Year 12 Equity and Diversity Scholarship.

The Year 12 Domestic Australian Scholarship is for outstanding Australian domestic students who are completing Year 12 studies. The successful candidate will receive a $5,000 bursary each year for three years. Applications close 3 November 2017.

UQ Support for international students under 18 years of age
If you have international students who will be aged 17 at the time they will commence their studies at UQ, The University of Queensland Student Services offers a supervision program which approves the accommodation, support and general welfare of unaccompanied international students under 18 years of age.

Applicants under the age of 18 will be identified in the admission process and an offer of admission will be conditional on the applicant submitting a completed International Student Supervision registration form signed by the applicant and their parent/legal custodian.

If the University accepts responsibility for accommodation and welfare arrangements, a Confirmation of Appropriate Accommodation and Welfare (CAAW) alongside a Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE) letter will be issued, so applicants can then apply for a student visa: .

QUT Additional entry requirements and scholarships in creative industries
For such as auditions, portfolios or interviews, students must apply online to QUT by 5pm on Friday 15 September, as well as applying through QTAC. Students interested in creative industries can also access , ranging from $10,000 to $30,000, many of which are awarded based on creative ability.

As part of the Australian Institute for Teaching and Leadership (AITSL) revised Standards and Procedures (2015), all applicants to initial teacher education courses (pre-service teachers) must satisfy both .
