At St Margaret’s 2009-2011
Since graduating from St Margaret’s in 2011, Emma completed a Bachelor of Science majoring in Biomedical Science, and an Honours project in Forensic Craniofacial Identification. Graduating at the top of her cohort with First Class Honours, Emma was fortunate enough to have the opportunity to co-author a peer-reviewed journal article that has since been published in Forensic Science International. She also co-authored a textbook chapter on the ethical considerations of unknown-provenance osteology.
Emma was a baker on season three of the television show, The Great Australian Bake Off, which gave her the opportunity to highlight her love of science, as well as promote her passion for women in STEM – a belief she says was instilled in her while at St Margaret’s.
Since then, Emma was accepted into dentistry at The University of Queensland where she averaged a 7.0 GPA and received a Dean's Commendation for Academic Excellence. She has deferred her studies to care full-time for her Mum following her sudden Stage 4 Colorectal cancer diagnosis in 2018.
Emma is now pursuing a career in Colorectal cancer research and has since applied to undertake a PhD in this field. Her goal is to contribute towards improving patient treatment and survival outcomes through investigating targeted therapeutic interventions and improving the specificity of diagnostic tools.
Emma said: “Throughout all of my experiences, I value the time I spent at St Margaret’s for giving me a strong sense of female empowerment, as well as courage to face life’s challenges.”
Emma was the recipient of St Margaret’s Young Past Student of Distinction Award in 2018.
