BComm, Olympian
At St Margaret’s 2006 - 2008
Since graduating from St Margaret’s in 2008, Emma has pursued her love of triathlon becoming an elite triathlete. She is a 2014 Commonwealth Games bronze medallist and 2012 Olympian, finishing eighth. Along with these accomplishments, Emma was also crowned the 2010 U23 World Triathlon Champion and a silver medallist at the Junior World Championships. Whilst at St Margaret’s, Emma participated in track and field, cross country, athletics and swimming and was the recipient of the St Margaret’s Sporting Excellence Award in both 2007 and 2008. Emma says these experiences “helped me to understand what hard work and determination can do on the sporting field, along with teaching me the values of teamwork and sportsmanship”.
Emma says St Margaret’s also gave her a great understanding of balancing sport with education and set her up with valuable skills to pursue her dream whilst also thinking about her future.
With triathlon being Emma’s main focus since graduating, she knew triathlon wouldn’t last forever and needed a focus for her life after retirement from sport. Whilst training up to 30 hours per week, competing full time and living overseas for up to eight months of the year since 2009, Emma simultaneously completed a Bachelor of Commerce degree majoring in Accounting.
Currently Emma is still competing for Australia in triathlon, aiming to qualify for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics (if they proceed in 2021) and one day hopes to put her university degree to use along with the many valuable lessons learnt from St Margaret’s and years as an elite sportsperson.
