Dr Georgia Hume is a gastroenterologist practising as a part-time senior visiting gastroenterologist at the Royal Brisbane & Women’s Hospitals (RBWH) where she has worked since her internship in 1995. She also opened a private gastroenterology practice at the Mater Medical Centre in 2015 after 10 years as part of a group private practice.
First attending St Margaret’s in Prep 1976, Georgia returned in Year 8 in 1984. Of her St Margaret’s education she said: “There were so many opportunities afforded by the school which have served me well throughout my life as a university student and a doctor and mother. At St Margaret’s, I immersed myself in school activities including the school orchestra and a variety of sports including swimming, lifesaving, gymnastics, ballgames, netball and athletics. This busy schedule was the perfect training for a hectic life where managing my own timetable and that of my children is crucial.”
Georgia received several awards whilst at school including the Society of the Sacred Advent Prize for Outstanding Academic Achievement and Active Participation in School Life when she was in Year 10.
Commencing her studies in medicine at The University of Queensland in 1989, Georgia felt apprehensive at the time but soon discovered that her academic education at St Margaret’s provided the solid foundation she needed to negotiate the rigours of university. She said: “Indeed, I believe I was perfectly placed to succeed thanks to my high school years at St Margaret’s and the great support and inspiration I received from my parents in particular, and my sister Sheridan.” She graduated with a Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery with First Class Honours and a University Medal in 1994.
After completing her general physician (RACP) exams in 2000, Dr Hume embarked on advanced training in Gastroenterology and Hepatology at the RBWH. She received a NH&MRC (National Health & Medical Research Council) scholarship to undertake a PhD in Inflammatory Bowel Disease through The University of Queensland and QIMR Berghofer from 2003. She became a fellow of the Royal Australian College of Physicians in 2003 (FRACP) and her PhD was undertaken predominantly part-time whilst practising as a part-time specialist in both private and public medicine and taking maternity leave after the birth of each of her four beloved children. Dr Hume completed her PhD studies in 2013.
Dr Hume is a member of the Australian Inflammatory Bowel Disease Association Committee (part of the Gastroenterological Society of Australia) from 2016 to 2019 as well as the Scientific Program Committee for the Australian Gastroenterology Week.
She said that her St Margaret’s education, together with her family, instilled in her the values of compassion, loyalty and hard work which have underpinned her adult life and career. She said: “I encourage all students at St Margaret’s to take full advantage of their time at our wonderful school and look with great hope to the future it will support.”
Dr Hume is particularly excited that her daughter Ella will be starting at St Margaret’s in 2020 in Year 7.
