At St Margaret’s 1971-1977; Prefect & Sports Captain
Catherine Hunter is a filmmaker who has been producing documentaries on the arts and architecture for the past 30 years. After two decades of documenting the arts with the Nine Network’s acclaimed “Sunday” program (1985-2006), she left to work as a freelance documentary filmmaker in collaboration with a small group of like-minded colleagues.
Her ABC documentaries include: Justin O’Brien – The Sacred Music of Colour, Quilty - Painting the Shadows, Australia’s Lost Impressionist - John Russell , Glenn Murcutt - Spirit of Place, Trent Parke: The Black Rose , Margaret Olley: A Life in Paint, Jeffrey Smart - Master of Stillness, Jenny Sages: Paths to Portraiture, Inland Heart: The Photography of Jeff Carter and Sidney Nolan: Mask and Memory.
In addition to her broadcast documentaries, Catherine has contributed commissioned films to the Art Gallery of New South Wales, the National Gallery of Australia, the Art Gallery of South Australia and the National Portrait Gallery as well as working on the ABC’s Australian Story.
Catherine says she never imagined she would end up in a career that involved the arts. At school she always hoped to become a newspaper journalist but after completing a cadetship she moved into television.
Of her St Margaret’s education, she says: “My years at St Margaret’s gave me, above and beyond anything else, great friendships which endure to this day. I believe that our year of ’77 have all excelled in their chosen careers as we left school believing that we should follow our passions.”
Catherine left Queensland in 1985, living in Sydney for 25 years before moving to the Blue Mountains. When she is not working, she is walking and enjoying her amazing little part of Australia. She lives with her partner Scott Baker who is, not surprisingly, is an artist. Her daughter Lily is a teacher and her son Sam is studying Communications.
